How do we release the need to hold on? How do we allow ourselves to be moved by life? Even when it’s not what we hoped or planned.
I remember being sat around the table at my friends house. It was three days into Neil being in ICU. Life had become a bubble, a cocoon. Suddenly, everything become small, quiet and insular. It felt weird.
Ever hear the old ‘natures cycle’ talk in a yoga class? The idea that we should take cues from trees and rivers in learning how to live with grace through the seasons of our lives?
I’m sure you have. And I’m sure you probably rolled your eyes too. Sure, it might feel a bit floaty. Too 'obvious' or 'simple' for our complex lives. I mean what does a tree know about Vicky from accounts flirting with your husband?

Our partner couldn't make it and the one person we actually know just can't be glued to us all night, despite our many silent pleas.
So here we are, clutching to our drinks for dear life, surrounded by people we don't know, so we talk about the weather (i mean thank god for the weather chat) and the people are nice but if we're honest, we wouldn't choose to spend the day, night or weekend with.

This is what comes up a lot when people think about coming on a yoga retreat, alone. The cringe worthy moments they've endured once or a 100 times (hand raises) during what it means to be a #adult.
There is a tendancy to go full steam ahead into the new year, but how can we move forward without looking back at where we have been? acknowledging what has brought us to the very place we now stand.

Its hot topic at the moment isnt it, empowerment. Especially when it comes to women.I see everyday incredible stories of women reclaiming there power after having it stripped from them and equally incredible stories of more and more women using their exqusite power to bring everyone up with them. I think we can agree, that whilst there is still progress to be made it's an incredible time to be alive for all women.
However it's actually not the women i have popped into talk about, its the girls that are yet to become them.

You know the kind where you forget your life roles and the 'status' you're 'meant' to upkeep. You forget what you look like and you certainly transcend caring about what other people think (holy shit, that's a freeing thought) or being 'self conscious' in anyway about well, anything.

What if every time you looked tired, snapped at someone, or were simply behaving a little too much like a three year old, your boss, partner, friend, co-worker handed you a blanket, an eye mask and a timer and said “its time for your nap.” And for 10 – 20 minutes you went into a room, closed the door and lay down.
When i first opened the studio it took me a while to get comfortable with my new role as 'studio owner/yoga teacher. I was in a dilemma at how to merge these new titles with who i already was: A woman who liked drinking wine, dropping regular F bombs, listening to hip hop and wearing sassy clothes. I didn't want to suppress or abandon who i was and what i enjoyed but i also didn't know what it would mean about me if i didn't, was i not a proper yogi?
This year i set out on a quest to fully celebrate my joy, acknowledge my achievements and only follow the things that turned me on.
Sound like every other wanky yoga blog you have ever read? well i'm happy to tell you it's not.
Is the real key to 'looking good', being around people that make you 'feel good'?
However i don't see to much of this. I see people going gun ho for a short stint (ahem, hey new years resolutions) and then i see them self destruct for a good 3 months after. I've done it more times than i care to remember and now see the pattern play out around me all the time, we abandon self care, worth, things that really nourish us (not just make us look good) and start to unleash our mean girl/guy to f$!* up the Christmas party.
