Autumn Yin Masterclass
You can feel it in the air these mornings;
The freshness to the breeze,
The coolness to the sand,
The sleepy sun getting up later and later.
All of a sudden, autumn is upon us.
It’s easy to get wistful for the summer, allowing pangs of apprehension rise up knowing that the longer nights of winter is approaching. So let’s just take a breath, take stock of where we are right now, in this moment, as we embrace the gifts of this season; Autumn.
Ancient Chinese medicine tells us that Autumn is associated with the Lungs and Large Intestine, organs that are both involved in taking in nutrition and eliminating wastes. When the energy of the Lungs and Large Intestine are depleted, our thinking can be muddy and disconnected, we can be prone to bouts of sadness and unable to express grief. When this energy is in balance, we feel confident, courageous and possess unwavering endurance, even in the face of adversity.
During the practice we'll focus on the upper body and arms, which house the meridians (energy channels) of the Lungs and Large Intestine. This is an opportunity for nourishment and purification. I know it is probably the most overused cliche in yoga, but this season and this sequence supports us in letting sh*t go, to release anything stale and stagnant. Leaving us with a sense of spaciousness for the new and get bringing us back to the gold at our core.
