Have you become the Fun Police?

2018-10-16

When was the last time you had proper belly laughing fun?

You know the kind where you forget your life roles and the 'status' you're 'meant' to upkeep. You forget what you look like and you certainly transcend caring about what other people think (holy shit, that's a freeing thought) or being 'self conscious' in anyway about well, anything.

Can you remember?

I went to see my Ayurvedic doctor in Feb this year ( i know, i'm saahhh yoga) and whilst i chatted away about why i was there and he did his usual of checking my tounge, feeling my pulse and asking some precise questions he sat back in his chair with a completely straight face and said ' Helen, you really need to start having more fun'

I did that involuntary laugh, you know the 'are you joking'/ i'm slightly offended one - and said 'what, i am fun!'. The conversation continued and he asked me some really great/ pointy questions (ones that cut through your BS) like:

  • When was the last time you had pure fun just for yourself? not for the benefit of someone else.
  • No, it can't be gaining joy from making someone else happy (Yup, this one got me)
When was the last time you had fun that was still fun the next morning/day ? aka not boozing/over spending in the shops or eating something made you feel terrible after? ( are you squirming yet?)

I left with strict instructions to find 1 thing to do per week that was just pure unadultered FUN. To let myself just laugh/explore/create for the hell of it.

I'm not gonna lie, i actually found it really hard. My mind went through this qualification process of whether it was practical / a good use of time/ 'silly' bla bla you know the rest and hey, i'm pretty fun already so you can imagine my dismay.

Despite believing i didn't need to be convinced to have more fun, it's amazing how easy it is to disapear down the rabbit hole of seriousness and become the fun police. This conversation was the perfect and very timely reminder to me of the importantance to make space/time and schedule in time for JOY as much as i do for everything else in my life, i'm hoping reading this it is for you to!

Because if we aren't having fun? whats the point.

This teaching has had a great influence on the kind of events we offer at the studio with out latest one being HIP HOP ASANA.

Yup, think Kale shots/ gangster names / a funky flow to the beats of 50 Cent and nessacary dance break to throw some shapes. Now lemme guess you are either reading this thinking FUN I WANNA COME, or your thinking: damn this looks so blady fun but will it be cringe? will i look like an idiot? dance break? i can't dance! or you are thinking: i hate rap, bye Felicia.

Option A & C, you're sweet you know what to do but B, I SEE YOU! I WAS YOU! hey i still am you at times. I dare you to come join us! come have a giggle on me (i mean, just wait until you see how much fun im gonna have teaching it) and join us.

Lets make the priority of JOY, of having FUN be something that doesn't get left behind because i'll say it again.

If we aren't having fun? whats the point.
